How should a translation handle dates from different calendars or ambiguous day-month formats?
Preserve source dates and their labels, flag ambiguity, and identify any separately requested calendar conversion. A translation should not silently choose a day-month interpretation or replace an event date with the date a certificate was issued.

Read the calendar and label first
Some records identify a calendar system explicitly; others rely on local conventions. A numeric string can be ambiguous without that context. Check whether the field refers to birth, registration, issue or validity before discussing conversion. Similar numbers do not make the events interchangeable.
Make any conversion traceable
If the receiving instruction calls for a converted date, ask how the provider will identify the original and the conversion method. Do not replace the source date without disclosure. A calendar calculation cannot resolve an unreadable digit or determine which of several source dates is legally controlling.
Use a discrepancy log
Compare date fields across related records and list differences as specific questions. Start with the event label, then the calendar and numerical order. A record showing an entry made after the event can be internally coherent; a conflict remains only after those distinctions are understood. Seek issuer clarification for a substantive discrepancy.
Identify both the calendar and the event
A date problem can involve calendar conversion, ambiguous number order or the meaning of the event being dated. Resolve these separately. The source may identify a local calendar by a heading, era name or abbreviation. Preserve that label. A sequence such as 04/05 is not safely read as April fifth merely because the destination uses month-first notation; the rest of the record and its stated convention matter.
An issue date, event date, registration date and effective date can appear on the same page. Even a correct calendar conversion becomes misleading if attached to the wrong event. For a sample check, write each source label beside its date before comparing the English version. Do not move a later registration date into the birth-date field to make an unfamiliar chronology look ordinary.
Keep conversions transparent and precision faithful
Where a conversion is included, ask the translator to distinguish the original date from its converted equivalent and identify the calendar used. Some records provide only a year, an approximate age or a month. Those should not acquire a precise day through calculation. Historical calendar changes and era-based numbering can also require context that a generic date calculator does not supply.
USCIS evidence guidance concerns translating the source accurately, not silently repairing inconsistent dates. If two records genuinely disagree after their calendar systems are understood, preserve both and seek appropriate issuer clarification or supporting evidence. During review, inspect every occurrence, including stamps, signatures and reverse-side annotations, because an apparently minor date may identify an amendment. A clear translation makes the source chronology inspectable and leaves unresolved discrepancies visible rather than manufacturing a single harmonized timeline.

Common questions
Can the translator assume month-day order?
Not where the source is ambiguous. Identify the format or seek clarification.
Sources: Policy Manual: evidence
Should a converted date replace the original?
Keep the original traceable and clearly label any additional conversion requested by the recipient.
Sources: Policy Manual: evidence
Is issue date the same as event date?
No. Preserve separate labels for the event, registration and document issuance.
Sources: Policy Manual: evidence
Does conversion resolve conflicting records?
No. It may clarify format, but underlying inconsistencies still require appropriate review.
