The short answer

What does an F-2 family member need to distinguish from the F-1 student’s record?

An F-2 family journey is tied to the principal student but still has individual identity, relationship, school and immigration records. The Department of State says accompanying family members receive individual I-20s. The student’s acceptance or approval should not be treated as every relative’s own decision.

What this guide covers

  • A linked family record is still an individual record
  • Separate family participation from permission for a new activity
  • Page-specific evidence and process boundaries

At a glance

  • An F-2 family journey is tied to the principal student but still has individual identity, relationship, school and immigration records.
  • The principal’s academic program does not by itself answer whether a dependent may work, begin a particular course or change classification.
  • Use the actual process owner and page-specific records for the next question.

A linked family record is still an individual record

The student-visa source describes eligible accompanying spouses and children in the F-2 framework and says each family member receives a separate Form I-20. Keep the family member’s name and document with the principal student connection. A marriage or birth record explains the relationship, while the I-20 explains the school-linked record; neither should be substituted for the family member’s actual visa or admission document.

A spouse’s plan to study and a child’s school enrollment are not the same question simply because both involve education. Record the individual, institution and proposed activity separately. This helps prevent the principal student’s academic permissions from being copied into a dependent’s file.

Separate family participation from permission for a new activity

The principal’s academic program does not by itself answer whether a dependent may work, begin a particular course or change classification. Those questions need the dependent category’s current rules and the actual proposed activity. The Department of State also distinguishes visa issuance from admission, so one relative’s visa decision should not be extended to another person merely because the family plans to travel together.

Create a separate row for every family member. Link the relationship evidence to the principal’s school record, then list the dependent’s actual plans. Ask the school about its dependent-document process and review each activity through the appropriate official guidance.

Evidence that explains this particular question

Principal student record: Identify the school and relevant student document. Relationship document: Preserve the official record connecting the dependent to the principal. Dependent identity: Keep the person’s passport and prior admission information separately. Proposed activity: Describe the dependent’s own study or employment plans rather than borrowing the student’s permissions.

For example, a spouse arriving later may have a separate visa interview and admission event from the student. Link the records to the same program without copying the principal’s dates onto the spouse’s history. Shared travel plans and individual government decisions need different entries.

The boundary to resolve before the next step

Maintain a separate document entry for each family member, linked to the principal student’s program. A relationship record explains the connection, while that relative’s own visa and admission records explain individual agency events.
