The short answer

How do the school, Form I-20, student visa and admission steps fit together?

For the usual F-1 route from abroad, a SEVP-certified school accepts the student and issues Form I-20 through SEVIS. The student then follows the applicable SEVIS fee and consular visa process. The visa, school acceptance and CBP admission remain distinct; the school’s designated official supports the student-record side of the journey.

What this guide covers

  • The school starts the student record, not the visa decision
  • Understand what Form I-20 does
  • Apply for the visa through the actual consular process
  • Admission and maintaining student status come afterward

At a glance

  • For the usual F-1 route from abroad, a SEVP-certified school accepts the student and issues Form I-20 through SEVIS.
  • The SEVIS I-901 payment, visa application and tuition are different payments.
  • A DSO manages school-side student questions; a consulate and CBP make different government decisions.

The school starts the student record, not the visa decision

The Department of State identifies a SEVP-approved school as the starting point for the student-visa route. After acceptance, the school creates the relevant SEVIS record and issues Form I-20. Academic acceptance and the immigration student record are connected, but an offer letter alone is not an F-1 visa and does not authorize entry.

The program matters. The official student page associates academic study with the F category and vocational or other recognized nonacademic study with M. Identify the actual course and school rather than assuming every institution that advertises international students can supply the same immigration process. The official DHS school-search resource helps identify SEVP-certified institutions.

Understand what Form I-20 does

Form I-20 is the school-issued certificate connected with the student’s SEVIS record. The official consular guidance identifies it as part of the student-visa documentation and states that the student and school official sign it. Keep the program, identity and start information accurate; a clerical or scheduling change is a school-record question to raise with the designated school official, or DSO.

SEVIS registration and the SEVIS I-901 fee are separate from the visa application fee. This guide does not quote an amount. Keep the relevant payment confirmation and current official instructions rather than treating tuition, a school deposit or a commercial service charge as the government payment record.

Apply for the visa through the actual consular process

After the school and SEVIS steps, the usual route from abroad moves to the Department of State student-visa application. DS-160, the post’s appointment process and the interview belong to this stage. The consular officer evaluates the application; the school cannot guarantee issuance because it accepted the student or issued an I-20.

The official page discusses academic preparation, how study and living costs will be paid and the purpose of the proposed stay as matters that can arise in visa review. Use the actual post’s current instructions. Preserve the difference between confirmed funding and a future expectation, and do not invent a model account of the student’s intentions.

Admission and maintaining student status come afterward

A student visa is a travel document used to request admission. CBP makes the entry decision and the admission record is distinct from both the visa and I-20. The official page also has timing rules for new-student travel; check the current rule before arranging arrival instead of inferring it from how early a visa can be issued.

Once studying, the student’s responsibilities include the school and immigration record. DHS directs students to their DSO about enrollment, program changes and other status questions. Academic permission to drop a class or accept a job should not be treated as the whole immigration authorization analysis. Work and practical training have their own rules.

Keep changed plans and family documents visible

If the school, program or start plan changes, contact the DSO about the student record rather than assuming an old I-20 still describes the new plan. A visa delay and an academic deferral are different events. Preserve both communications so the institution and any qualified adviser understand the actual sequence.

The Department of State says accompanying spouses or children receive individual I-20s. Their records and proposed activities should therefore be kept person-specific. The principal student’s acceptance does not give every family member identical permissions. Current fees, entry timing and individual eligibility must be checked in their own official sources.
