What does a translated diploma show, and when is a separate degree certificate needed?
A diploma translation communicates the award named by the issuing institution, its holder and conferral information. Keep it distinct from transcripts, provisional certificates and an evaluator’s equivalency opinion; the recipient determines which evidence establishes a completed degree.

Preserve the award’s actual name
Degree titles can contain subject, honors or institutional terminology that has no exact U.S. counterpart. Translate faithfully and retain the original designation where useful. Do not convert the title into an American degree level as though the issuing university had made that equivalency finding.
Separate ceremony and conferral dates
A decorative diploma may show an issue or ceremony date while the transcript records a different conferral date. Preserve each source label and ask the university about any discrepancy. An expected completion date or provisional award should not become an unconditional completed degree in translation.
Check the complete award record
The recipient may ask for a degree certificate, transcript, diploma supplement or direct confirmation. Keep seals and signatures visible and identify any reverse-side entries. Translation does not verify institutional recognition or authenticity; those questions belong to the relevant institution, evaluator or regulator.
Read the award rather than the decorative presentation
A diploma can use ceremonial wording, Latin phrases or an abbreviated degree title around a small amount of substantive information. Identify the awarding institution, recipient, qualification, field if stated and conferral date. The date of the ceremony, printing or replacement issue may differ from conferral. An honorary award, intermediate certificate and earned academic degree should retain their distinct labels rather than being standardized to a familiar U.S. degree name.
Imagine a diploma naming a degree broadly while the transcript identifies a concentration. The translation of the diploma should not acquire that concentration from the transcript unless the source diploma actually states it. The two translated records can be delivered together and compared, but each should preserve its own content. This is particularly important where a ceremonial diploma is less detailed than a separate official degree certificate.
Use supporting records to answer questions the diploma cannot
A diploma usually cannot show every course, credit or grade needed for detailed academic review. The Department of Education's recognition guidance places the acceptance decision with the receiving authority, which may ask for a transcript or evaluation in addition to the award record. Determine which question is being asked: proof of conferral, course preparation or credential comparability. Those questions can call for different source documents.
Inspect seals, signature captions and reverse-side notes before calling the source complete. If a replacement diploma states that it duplicates an earlier award, retain that wording and both relevant dates. For a name discrepancy, preserve the historic name and connect it through separate supporting evidence instead of rewriting the award. Finally, keep the original-language diploma with the translation and any separately requested degree certificate so the recipient can see which document actually supplies the conferral fact.

Common questions
Can a diploma translation assign a U.S. degree equivalent?
No. Equivalency assessment is a separate evaluation performed for the receiving authority’s purpose.
Is a graduation ceremony date the conferral date?
Not necessarily. Preserve the labels and seek issuer clarification when the difference matters.
Should honors be omitted as decoration?
No. Preserve award wording and distinctions that appear in the source.
Does a diploma replace the transcript?
The receiving institution decides. Many workflows request both because they document different information.

What does Eagle Translate’s ATA corporate affiliation tell me about a diploma order?
It identifies a company-level professional-association affiliation that you can check in ATA’s directory. The diploma translation itself comes with the responsible translator’s signed accuracy certificate when you order Certified or Premium. Keep that language-service package separate from any assessment of the degree’s academic equivalence.
