How do I translate a household register that contains several relatives and changing entries?
A household register can combine residence, family relationships and later administrative changes. Preserve its structure and distinguish the person’s entry from other household members; the receiving authority decides whether the register is acceptable for a requested civil fact.

Map the register before translating
Count covers, index pages, member pages and change sheets. A household-head field can organize the register without proving every resident’s relationship to each other. Identify which page and label support each asserted fact rather than assuming a shared address establishes parentage or marriage.
Keep movement and correction history readable
An entry may show arrival, departure, cancellation or transfer to another register. These administrative events are not interchangeable with birth, death or immigration status. Translate their dates and labels in context. Do not omit a canceled entry simply because it appears outdated; it may explain the current record.
Agree on the complete source scope
Ask whether the recipient needs the whole register or an authorized extract. The translator cannot decide that unrelated household pages are unnecessary under a complete-document rule. If privacy is a concern, obtain the recipient’s instruction before redaction and keep the supplied scope documented.
Use a person-and-entry map for a multi-person record
Household registers can combine people, relationships, addresses and administrative changes on adjoining pages. Start a page map that identifies each visible member and the entry belonging to that member. A notation printed beside one person's row should not migrate to the household head merely because that name appears first. Preserve the register's own relationship labels, including whether they describe a link to the head rather than a direct link between every pair of members.
An illustrative register might list a daughter in an original entry, then mark her departure to another household. That departure date is not necessarily her marriage date or proof of residence elsewhere for every later period. Translate the event label and its reference number instead of drawing a narrative conclusion. If a later sheet cancels an earlier entry, the cancellation is part of the record's history rather than an invitation to delete the earlier text.
Choose an extract deliberately rather than cropping a family record
Country-specific State Department guidance helps determine whether a household record, individual civil certificate or another document is expected for an immigrant visa purpose. These choices should be resolved before a provider quotes a single page. A crop containing only an applicant's name may remove column headings, the issuing office or a change annotation that explains the entry. It can also conceal that the source covers multiple people.
Where the recipient permits an official person-specific extract, identify that extract as its own source rather than presenting it as a complete translation of the whole register. Where the full register is requested, make sensitive relatives' entries part of the agreed scope. During review, follow the sequence of page numbers and continuation marks from cover to final endorsement. The practical objective is a readable record of membership and changes, with no unsupported assumption that shared registration proves every family relationship or a person's current immigration status.

Common questions
Does a shared household prove a family relationship?
Not by itself. Read the relationship labels and check what evidence the receiving authority requests.
Can I translate only my own page?
Confirm the allowed scope with the recipient. Covers, indexes or change pages may be relevant to interpreting the extract.
Should canceled entries disappear from the translation?
No. Preserve visible cancellation and movement notes when they are part of the supplied record.
Is a household register always an accepted birth record?
Acceptance is country and process specific. Consult the official civil-document guidance for the issuing jurisdiction.
