When is a partial translation different from a complete-document requirement?
A partial translation selects content and must be identified as such. Obtain the recipient’s acceptance of the proposed extract before paying for a reduced scope; a provider’s willingness to translate selected passages does not establish that the result is acceptable evidence.

Define the selection precisely
Name the pages, fields and passages to include, along with any context needed to understand them. A page selection and a summary are different deliverables. Do not call either a complete translation when source content has deliberately been left out.
Check what the selection hides
An excluded condition, footnote or later annotation may qualify the selected statement. Read the whole source before choosing passages. If the recipient requires a full translation, cost savings do not authorize omission of material that seems unrelated to the reader’s main concern.
Make the certificate match the scope
Ask the provider how it identifies the source and translated selection. Certification should not imply that unseen pages were translated. Keep written recipient approval and the agreed scope with the final package so an extract is not later mistaken for a complete record.
Separate a selected source from an incomplete rendering
A recipient might authorize a specific extract, such as one register entry, while another request calls for a complete document. Those instructions create different source scopes. A complete translation of an authorized extract can be accurate within that scope, but it should not be described as the full underlying register. Identify who selected the extract and whether it was issued by the authority or assembled privately.
An excerpt can lose meaning when it omits headings, exceptions or references. A favorable paragraph in a judgment may be qualified by the following paragraph, and a grade line may depend on a reverse-side legend. Before selecting pages, check what the omitted material contributes to interpretation. Translation savings should not come from hiding context that the receiving reader needs to understand the passage.
Get scope permission before requesting a shorter job
USCIS evidence instructions call for a full English translation of a foreign-language document submitted to USCIS. A provider's willingness to quote only selected paragraphs does not establish that such a submission satisfies that rule. Where another recipient permits a limited extract, retain its instruction and tell the translator exactly which source boundaries apply. The language professional should not have to decide the evidence requirement.
For an illustrative academic request, a school may ask about one course but still need the page heading, term and grading key around that course. Ask whether an official course description or institution-issued extract is the appropriate source rather than cropping a transcript line. In the delivered file, distinguish translated content, omitted material and translator notes. If the destination later expands its request, provide the additional source and obtain a coherent revised package instead of stitching unrelated fragments into something labeled complete.

Common questions
Is a translated extract the same as a summary?
No. An extract selects source passages; a summary condenses information.
Sources: Policy Manual: evidence
Can a provider approve partial scope for USCIS?
The recipient’s official instructions control acceptance, not the provider’s sales decision.
Sources: Policy Manual: evidence
Should excluded text be concealed?
No. Identify the limited scope honestly and retain the original record.
Sources: Policy Manual: evidence
Can a certificate cover pages never supplied?
It should accurately describe the work and source scope rather than imply unseen content was translated.
