The short answer

Which passport pages should I identify before ordering a translation?

Start with the receiving request, then distinguish biographic information, endorsements, visas and entry stamps. A translation preserves the selected pages’ text; it does not determine identity authenticity, visa validity, admission or current immigration status.

Separate the passport’s functions

The biographic page identifies the passport holder and issuing state. Visas and border stamps are separate entries by different authorities. Inventory the pages requested rather than treating the entire booklet as one uniform certification. The Department of State civil-document instructions identify passport biographic-page requirements for immigrant visa processing.

Preserve machine-readable and human-readable differences

Names and dates can appear in multiple scripts or machine-readable lines. Keep the source forms identifiable and do not silently choose a spelling from one line to overwrite another. An apparent abbreviation can reflect system constraints, but a translator should not speculate about an unexplained discrepancy.

Avoid immigration conclusions from stamps

A stamp can document a particular event without proving current status or a complete travel history. Preserve date, issuer and annotation as legible. If a page is unclear, obtain a better image rather than inventing a location or date from the surrounding itinerary.

Map the passport as a set of different evidence pages

A passport booklet can contain a biographic page, amendments, observations, visas, entry stamps and blank pages. Those elements have different issuers and functions. The passport authority issues the identity document, a consulate may issue a visa, and a border authority may place an admission stamp. Translating them under one issuer heading would obscure which authority created each entry.

The machine-readable zone can help compare the printed name and document number, but it is not a substitute for translating all relevant visible labels and annotations. An amendment may change a name or add an observation after issuance. Keep the date and authority of that amendment connected to its text. Do not silently replace the original biographic spelling with the spelling used on a later visa.

Choose pages from the request rather than from guesswork

A request for a passport identity page differs from a request covering travel history or all passport pages. Identify the named scope before sending only the page that looks important. USCIS evidence instructions supply the foreign-language translation rule for documents submitted there; they do not mean every passport booklet in every case must be translated in full. The particular form or evidence request determines what material is being submitted.

For a sample travel-page review, mark each stamp's visible date, place and authority and leave an unreadable entry identified as unreadable. Do not calculate a period of lawful stay from a visa validity date: visa issuance, admission and authorized stay are separate matters. Include a page image wide enough to show overlapping stamps and their edges. A translation that preserves the evidence can help a reader inspect it, while a reconstructed travel narrative belongs outside the translated source and may need independent records.

Common questions

Does a translated visa prove I was admitted?

No. Visa issuance and admission are different processes, and current status needs the appropriate official record.

Must every passport page be translated?

The receiving instruction controls scope. Inventory the exact pages requested before ordering.

Sources: Civil documents for immigrant visa processing

Can an unclear stamp be reconstructed from my itinerary?

Do not insert a guess into the translation. Seek a clearer source or flag the unreadable element.

Should machine-readable spelling replace every name field?

Keep the different source representations traceable and raise discrepancies separately.
