How does a school-leaving certificate differ from a transcript when preparing translated records?
A school-leaving certificate may show completion, examination results or eligibility for further study. Translate its actual credential name and issuer; do not assume it is equivalent to a U.S. diploma or that it replaces a complete academic transcript.

Identify the awarding body
A school, education ministry or examination council may issue different records for the same student. Record the award title, examination session and issuing body. A statement of attendance is different from a completion award. Keep the original credential name alongside a careful English rendering where equivalence would otherwise be implied.
Preserve results and qualification levels
Subjects, grades, pass classifications and examination attempts can affect the recipient’s review. Do not convert local grades or remove failed subjects to make the record resemble a U.S. transcript. Any grading legend supplied by the issuer belongs in the document inventory.
Ask which record set the recipient needs
The receiving school or evaluator may need both the leaving certificate and detailed marksheets. Ask which document establishes completion and which supplies subject results, then check whether either must arrive directly from the issuer. A translation order should identify those two functions rather than combine their titles into one invented academic record.
Identify the educational milestone certified
A school-leaving certificate may certify attendance completion, examination results or eligibility to proceed to another level. These are not automatically the same as a transcript listing every course. Read the issuing body and award language: a school can issue an attendance record while a separate examination board issues the final qualification. Preserve both authorities when they appear rather than attributing all results to the school.
For an example, a student might hold a completion letter from the school and an examination certificate issued later by a national board. The completion date and examination award date can differ without being an error. Translate each title as presented and retain the subject results or classification actually shown. Do not add U.S. grade-level equivalence, a grade-point average or a statement of graduation that the source does not make.
Connect the certificate to the recipient's academic question
The Department of Education explains that recognition of foreign qualifications belongs to the relevant receiving institution, employer or licensing authority. A translation makes a school record readable; it does not decide whether the credential meets a particular admission standard. Ask whether the recipient needs the leaving certificate, detailed marks, proof of award or a separate evaluation, because a beautifully translated one-page certificate may not answer a course-level question.
Before delivery, compare candidate number, examination session, subject names, results and any grading legend. A provisional result may be replaced by a final board certificate, and a duplicate issued later should retain its stated status. If a reverse-side legend explains pass categories, include it in the source package. This allows the recipient or evaluator to distinguish the student's achievement from the translator's role and avoids using a general school letter as an invented equivalent of a nationally awarded qualification.

Common questions
Is every leaving certificate a U.S. high-school diploma equivalent?
No. Qualification recognition depends on the recipient and its evaluation criteria.
Can results be changed to U.S. letter grades?
Do not alter the translation. A separate evaluation may interpret the grading system if the recipient requests it.
Does a certificate replace marksheets?
Not automatically. Ask the school or evaluator which records are required together.
Who should send an official record?
Follow the receiving institution’s current delivery instructions, which may require an issuer-controlled channel.
