The short answer

How does DS-260 differ from a petition, DS-160 or adjustment of status?

DS-260 is the Department of State’s online immigrant visa application accessed through CEAC. It is distinct from a USCIS petition, DS-160 nonimmigrant visa research and I-485 adjustment. Keep application answers, civil-document preparation and later consular instructions in separate but connected parts of the file.

Identify the immigrant visa stage

A USCIS petition and a consular immigrant visa application perform different functions. Start with the actual agency correspondence and identify which stage is under review. A petition approval should not be renamed a completed DS-260 or an issued visa.

DS-160 and DS-260 are also distinct applications despite similar names and online access. Keep file labels precise so that a confirmation, saved draft or instruction from one process is not used as the record of the other.

Reconcile answers with genuine civil records

Prepare a private index of names, family relationships and relevant history using the actual source records. A document’s issue date may differ from the event it records. Where a name or date differs, retain the discrepancy and the supporting record rather than silently rewriting history to make the folder look consistent.

Keep application completion separate from document review

An online application record, a civil-document submission and an interview instruction can be different tasks within the wider process. Track what was actually completed and what remains. Use the authority’s current directions rather than assuming that an online confirmation means every document has been reviewed.

Protect case-access information and review handoffs

CEAC access information and civil documents belong in a private file. Do not put identifiers into this site’s search or correction messages. Record agency requests with their dates and source links so any retained representative can review the actual communication. The free checklist does not submit documents, declare a case ready or guarantee a visa.

Record the meaning of a document status carefully

A working tracker should state the actual communication received, with its source and date, rather than rename every completed task as approval. An uploaded record, a request for clarification and an interview instruction can describe different stages. Preserve the agency’s wording alongside the private task list so the next reviewer can identify what remains without relying on a misleading summary label.
