The short answer

How is G-884 different from asking for a copy of my immigration file?

G-884 requests the return of original documents previously submitted to establish eligibility for a USCIS benefit. A FOIA request seeks access to records and is a different task. Identify the original, the prior submission and the person entitled to request it before using the current instructions.

Name the physical original being sought

A birth certificate, court record or other original may have been included in a past filing. Start by identifying the actual document rather than requesting an undefined complete file. Note its issuing authority, the person named, the approximate submission and any available receipt reference without altering the document description.

The request concerns originals submitted as evidence to USCIS. A document held by a consulate, court or another agency may require a different process. A photocopy in a private folder does not establish where the original is currently held, so keep uncertainty in the inventory visible.

Distinguish return from access and correction

An original-return request, a records-copy request and a correction request solve different problems. If the aim is to see what was filed, the FOIA process may be relevant research. If the aim is to change information in a record, returning an original does not itself make that change.

Link the request to the prior submission

Organize the evidence of where and when the original was submitted. Retain copies of cover letters, receipt notices or other references that help identify the earlier matter. Read the current G-884 instructions for identity, authority and destination requirements instead of assuming every family member can request the same document.

Plan for receipt and storage

Keep a dated copy of the request and any agency response. When a document is returned, compare it with the inventory and store it securely. Record what was actually returned rather than marking all missing documents resolved. This page offers a free tracking aid but cannot locate a document or promise its return.
