The short answer

How is the I-134 financial-support declaration different from I-864?

I-134 is a declaration of financial support for certain temporary-stay benefit contexts described by USCIS. I-864 is a different affidavit framework. Identify the receiving process and the supporter’s role before collecting financial records; similar words about sponsorship do not make the forms interchangeable.

Begin with the receiving process

The word sponsor is used casually for several immigration roles. I-134’s stated purpose concerns financial support for a beneficiary of certain benefits during a temporary stay. Identify the actual process and current instructions before treating a supporter’s bank statement as the answer to every sponsorship question.

Keep the supporter, beneficiary and any family members clearly identified. A financial declaration is not a promise by this publication that the receiving authority will accept the arrangement. The authority’s requirement, the truthful financial record and the legal meaning of the declaration must be considered separately.

Do not substitute the I-864 framework

I-864 and I-134 have different purposes and instructions. A checklist prepared for one should not be relabeled for the other. The relevant form’s instructions should control which financial facts and supporting records are being reviewed, including how the relationship between the participants is described.

Create a private financial-record index

Organize records by the fact they support: income source, asset ownership, financial commitments or another requested item. Distinguish current circumstances from an older tax period or bank snapshot. Keep account numbers and full financial documents out of public search queries and general editorial correspondence.

Resolve missing facts before signing

A supporter should review the completed declaration and understand the particular undertaking rather than sign a blank form. Record unclear ownership, shared accounts or inconsistent figures as issues for review. The free checklist helps compare sources of information but does not set an income threshold or determine anyone’s qualification.

Explain a financial snapshot before comparing it

A statement can show an account balance without identifying every commitment or the future availability of funds. Keep the statement date and ownership visible and record which question the receiving process asks. An employer’s estimate of future income and a historical tax document should not be silently treated as the same measure. A clear index supports review without turning this guide into financial or legal advice.
