Which civics test applies to my naturalization application?
USCIS assigns the civics test version by the N-400 filing date. As verified October 25, 2026, filings before October 20, 2025 use the 2008 test; filings on or after that date use the 2025 test. English speaking, reading and writing remain distinct examination components.

Use the filing date rather than the interview year
The current USCIS interview-and-test page ties the civics transition to when Form N-400 was filed. It assigns the 2008 test to applications filed before October 20, 2025 and the 2025 test to those filed on or after that date. An interview occurring in 2026 does not, by itself, identify the applicable version. Check the actual application record before selecting study material or comparing a friend's interview experience.
The two civics tests have different structures
For the 2008 version, USCIS describes up to ten questions from the one-hundred-question bank, with six correct answers required to pass. For the 2025 version, the page describes twenty questions from a bank of 128, with twelve correct answers required. These are current-source details verified for this guide, not a promise about future policy. Use the official version-specific study resources rather than an undated commercial summary.
English has speaking, reading and writing components
USCIS explains that speaking ability is assessed through the interview. For reading, the applicant must read one of three sentences correctly; for writing, the applicant must write one of three sentences correctly under the applicable standard. A civics practice quiz therefore does not cover the entire examination. Organize preparation around the actual components while keeping any exception or accommodation question separate.
Accommodations and exceptions solve different problems
A disability accommodation can change how the examination is conducted without removing the underlying requirement. USCIS's medical-disability policy separately addresses N-648 exceptions where the applicable medical and professional-certification requirements are met. A diagnosis or difficulty studying does not automatically establish that exception. Age- or residence-based provisions also need their own current official review; this page does not infer them from the standard test counts.
Keep study help tied to the official question
A useful study plan starts by identifying the correct version, locating official materials and recognizing which answers may depend on current officeholders or the applicant's location. Do not memorize an old screenshot as if every answer remains fixed. This guide does not reproduce current political answers. Check the institution responsible for a changing answer and return to the current USCIS guidance before the interview.

Common questions
Does my interview date decide the civics version?
Under the current transition rule verified here, the N-400 filing date determines the version, not simply the interview year.

Is studying the old one-hundred-question bank enough for every applicant?
No. Applications filed on or after October 20, 2025 use the 2025 framework and its 128-question bank under the cited current rule.
