Does renewing a Green Card renew permanent resident status?
A Green Card is evidence of residence, while card renewal and removal of conditional residence are different processes. Form I-90 is the starting official source for ordinary card renewal or replacement. A conditional two-year card requires a separate conditions inquiry.

At a glance
- Card renewal and residence conditions are different legal tasks.
- An LPR card expiration does not itself expire LPR employment authorization.
- A pending renewal does not answer every travel-document question.
Start with the kind of card problem
An approaching expiration, a lost card and a mistake printed on a card are not identical requests. The current I-90 page and instructions identify the renewal or replacement categories. Read the category against the actual document and history, rather than assuming every request for a Green Card uses the same reason. A corrected card can solve an evidence problem without being a new grant of residence.
Conditional cards require a different question
USCIS expressly states that a conditional two-year card cannot be renewed. Marriage-based conditions use I-751, and entrepreneur conditions use I-829. That makes the card's category essential before beginning an ordinary renewal discussion. Conditional residents can use I-90 for specified replacement reasons such as loss, damage, incorrect information or a legal name change; that does not remove the conditions. Preserve the original approval information so the document request is not confused with an underlying status petition.
Expiration dates have more than one meaning
The employment authorization regulation says a lawful permanent resident's I-551 expiration reflects card renewal and does not expire the person's employment authorization. This illustrates why a plastic card's date should not be treated as a universal end date for every right or status question. It does not establish what a carrier, employer or agency will accept as current documentary evidence. The specific transaction still has its own documentation rules.
Read the actual receipt before using it as evidence
A renewal submission, a receipt and a replacement card are three different records. If a USCIS notice supplies an extension or other temporary evidence, use the notice's actual language and the documents it says must accompany it. Do not rely on a duration remembered from an older article. Keep the full notice, including identification and explanatory pages, so the receiving agency can assess the evidence rather than seeing an isolated screenshot.
Travel requires a separate document review
USCIS's permanent-resident travel page distinguishes travel documents from CBP's admission decision. A pending replacement request should not be assumed to supply every document needed for international boarding or return. Review the card and notice together, the destination's passport and visa requirements, and any special circumstances such as a lost card abroad or a long absence. This page does not provide a personal travel clearance or predict admission.

Common questions
Can I use ordinary renewal to remove marriage conditions?
No. USCIS identifies I-751 as the marriage conditions-removal petition and says the two-year conditional card cannot be renewed.

Does the date on my card end LPR employment authorization?
The cited regulation says the I-551 expiration does not expire LPR employment authorization. Employers must still assess acceptable evidence under the applicable verification rules.

How long does my renewal receipt extend the card?
Read the current notice itself and its accompanying-document requirements. This guide does not reproduce an extension duration that may change.

Is an online submission confirmation enough for international travel?
Do not assume it is. A submission record, status evidence, airline boarding documentation and CBP admission are different questions.
