The short answer

How should a family member connect an M-2 record to an M-1 program?

M-2 is a dependent framework connected to an M-1 vocational student. The connection matters, but each relative still needs accurate individual records. Do not borrow F-family assumptions for a vocational-student family or infer a dependent’s activity permission from the principal’s training schedule.

What this guide covers

  • Use the M program as the principal connection
  • A change to the principal’s plan can raise a separate family question
  • Page-specific evidence and process boundaries

At a glance

  • M-2 is a dependent framework connected to an M-1 vocational student.
  • Program completion, a changed curriculum or a later travel plan should be connected to the actual school and immigration records.
  • Use the actual process owner and page-specific records for the next question.

Use the M program as the principal connection

The Department of State places vocational and recognized nonacademic study in the M framework and describes accompanying family members in M-2. Its student-visa guidance says each accompanying family member receives a separate I-20. Match the dependent’s own identity and relationship record to the relevant principal and school record instead of relying on a household list with no individual document trail.

The vocational student’s program end and a dependent’s personal plans should remain separate calendar entries. A shared household may arrange travel together, but each person has their own documents. Compare the actual records before assuming that one family itinerary resolves every dependent question.

A change to the principal’s plan can raise a separate family question

Program completion, a changed curriculum or a later travel plan should be connected to the actual school and immigration records. The school can clarify its own record, but it cannot issue a visa or decide admission. A dependent’s proposed study or work needs the current M-2 rules rather than an assumption that all student families have the same permissions. Use the M-2 authority for the particular activity being proposed.

Map the principal’s program and each dependent separately. Confirm which institution maintains the school documents, then identify the immigration question attached to the dependent’s activity. Use M-category information rather than copying an F-category checklist without review.

Evidence that explains this particular question

Vocational program: Identify the principal student’s actual school and training schedule. Family relationship: Keep the official relationship record with the relevant names and dates. Dependent travel history: Preserve each person’s own visa and admission documents. Household plan: Describe schooling or other activities proposed for the family member.

For example, a principal’s revised vocational schedule can create a school-record question while a dependent’s proposed new activity creates another question. Keep the affected person and requested activity explicit. A family-wide calendar update should not be described as individual authorization for every relative.

The boundary to resolve before the next step

A family change can involve both the vocational student’s program and a dependent’s individual record. Identify which person and which activity are affected before asking the school or agency for clarification.
