What activities and evidence belong to a B-2 visit?
Department of State guidance places tourism, family or friend visits and medical treatment within the B-2 visitor discussion. Employment, ordinary academic study and permanent residence are separate category questions; an invitation does not decide the visa or admission result.

Describe the visit that will actually occur
The official visitor page gives tourism, vacations, visits with friends or relatives and medical treatment as B-2 examples. It also distinguishes non-credit recreational study from academic programs. The category should describe the real purpose, not a simplified holiday label that leaves out work or another material activity. A change in plans should remain visible in the account.
A proposed visit can change after a relative’s illness, a new event or another practical development. Record the changed plan accurately. Do not preserve an outdated itinerary merely because it looks simpler, and do not assume the changed facts have the same immigration treatment.
An invitation is not a government guarantee
The Department of State discusses trip purpose, ability to pay and intended departure in visa review, and says a visitor does not qualify merely through assurances from U.S. friends or family. A host letter can explain context without becoming a substitute for the actual consular assessment. CBP makes a separate entry decision even after a visa has been issued.
Prepare a factual description of the visit. Check that the travel, accommodation and funding accounts are consistent with the underlying records. If plans include activities beyond an ordinary visit, identify them expressly rather than leaving them out because they complicate the story.
Evidence that explains this particular question
Visit purpose: Describe the family or tourism plans accurately and consistently. Accommodation plan: Identify the actual arrangement without inventing a reservation. Funding record: Keep evidence of the proposed payment arrangement separate from assumptions about eligibility. Return plan: Record the intended itinerary as a proposal rather than a guaranteed admission period.
For example, a family invitation can explain whom a visitor plans to see, while the trip budget explains how the visit will be supported. Neither record converts an unrelated work or academic activity into tourism. Describe each material purpose in its own words and use the source for that activity.
The boundary to resolve before the next step
A credible account describes the actual trip, including any material activity beyond a holiday or family visit. Keep proposed dates, funding arrangements and host information accurate without turning any one item into a promised outcome.

Common questions
Is an invitation a visa guarantee?
No. Host assurances do not replace the consular decision or later CBP admission.

Can employment be added to a tourist visit?
Ordinary employment is outside the visitor-purpose framework and needs its own category analysis.

Does a short course automatically fit B-2?
No. The source distinguishes non-credit recreation from degree or certificate study.

Are the host’s funds the only evidence that matters?
No. The source discusses the actual trip and applicant circumstances, not a universal host-letter test.
