The short answer

How should a bank statement translation preserve financial information without changing the evidence?

Keep account ownership, statement periods, transaction labels and currencies visible. A translation communicates the record supplied; it does not verify funds, establish financial eligibility or convert a foreign balance into an accepted U.S. financial assessment.

At a glance

  • Keep account ownership, statement periods, transaction labels and currencies visible.
  • Identify owner and statement period.
  • Use the free checklist to organize the handoff before ordering a paid service.

Identify the account and reporting period

Distinguish an account holder from an authorized signatory, beneficiary or contact. Preserve joint ownership labels and the opening and closing dates of the statement period. A balance on one date is different from an average balance or a credit limit. Do not let a shortened English label conceal that difference.

Keep currencies and transaction signs explicit

A currency symbol may be shared by several currencies. Retain any currency code stated in the source and preserve debits, credits, negative amounts and decimal conventions. Do not silently convert values using a current exchange rate. If a separate conversion is requested, it needs a clearly identified method and date.

Agree on privacy and evidence scope

Statements can expose account numbers and unrelated transactions. Ask the recipient whether redaction or selected pages are permitted before altering the source package. A translation provider should know the agreed scope, but should not certify that the funds are genuine, available or sufficient for an immigration requirement.

Follow money fields without changing their meaning

A bank statement can show an opening balance, transactions during a period, an ending balance and an available balance that differs from the ledger balance. Preserve those labels. A loan facility or overdraft limit is not money owned by the account holder. Likewise, a pending deposit is not necessarily a posted credit. An English table that collapses these fields into total funds can communicate a stronger financial position than the source records.

For an illustrative reconciliation, compare the opening amount plus posted credits minus posted debits with the closing amount. This is a transcription check, not an audit of the account. A mismatch may come from a missed continuation page, a decimal separator or an untranslated fee line. Send the discrepancy to the provider for review rather than changing a number to make the arithmetic work.

Preserve the connection between pages and account holders

Multi-page statements often repeat the account identifier only in a header or footer. Keep enough of that repeated structure to show which pages belong together, especially when two currencies or joint accounts appear in one download. An account holder, authorized user and payment beneficiary have different relationships to the account. Translate those captions faithfully instead of treating every named person as an owner.

USCIS evidence guidance supplies the language framework for foreign-language financial records submitted there; the applicable request determines which financial facts matter. If only a balance certificate was requested, a statement may add transactions without answering the certificate question. If selected pages or masked account digits are permitted, document that source scope before work begins. The final translation should identify the actual period, currency and ownership labels supplied, without asserting that funds are genuine, unrestricted or sufficient for a particular immigration purpose.

Common questions

Can a translator verify that money is available?

No. A linguistic certificate does not audit the bank, authenticate the account or establish financial eligibility.

Sources: Policy Manual: evidence

Should foreign balances become U.S. dollar amounts?

Preserve the recorded currency. Any separately requested conversion should disclose its method, source and date.

Sources: Policy Manual: evidence

Can I remove transaction pages?

Confirm the recipient’s evidence scope first and document any approved redaction or omission.

Sources: Policy Manual: evidence

Is a credit limit the same as a balance?

No. Preserve each source label so the receiving reviewer can distinguish assets, debt and credit availability.
