How do I organize transcripts when credits came from several institutions?
List every institution and identify the record owner for each period of study. A transfer summary on one transcript may not replace the original institution’s record; follow the recipient’s required coverage and source-delivery rules.

Map study rather than degrees alone
Community courses, exchange study and transferred credits can appear under a final degree. Build a timeline showing where each course was taken and where the result is recorded.
Distinguish an original result from transfer notation
A receiving university may display accepted credit without the original grade or course detail. The evaluator can require the originating record. Do not ask the translator to recreate missing information from a transfer total.
Check exceptions with the actual recipient
MIT, Stanford and evaluation services publish different coverage instructions. Use the rule for the intended application rather than assuming one institution’s exception applies elsewhere. Keep unresolved source requests visible in the free file inventory.
A practical review for this handoff
Create a separate line for study abroad, summer coursework and transferred work, even if an exception may ultimately apply. Then mark the recipient’s actual instruction for each. This makes an exception traceable rather than allowing an unexplained missing transcript to look like an accidental omission.
Use institution names as printed on the source, including former names where relevant. A timeline can connect overlapping attendance periods, but it should not conceal concurrent study or imply that one institution issued another institution’s results.
Trace coursework back to the institution that taught it
A final university transcript may list transfer credits without reproducing the original courses or grades. Identify where each block of study occurred and which source documents it. Exchange semesters, summer study and concurrent enrollment deserve separate entries even when they contributed to one degree. A receiving institution's recognition of transferred credit does not automatically make it the issuer of the original academic results.
For a sample record map, place an originating college course beside the final university's transfer-credit line. The latter may show only a total or a converted designation. Do not reconstruct the original course grade from that summary. Ask the recipient or evaluator whether it needs the originating transcript, then obtain the source through the required channel. Preserve institution names as printed during the relevant attendance period.
Apply coverage exceptions only where they are actually published
MIT, Stanford and NASBA International Evaluation Services publish different record-coverage instructions for their respective processes. Read the applicable rule for each institution attended rather than borrowing an exception from another recipient. A central graduate-admissions page may not answer every departmental question, and an evaluator's country rules may require information not requested by a university application portal.
Build a table with attendance dates, source institution, credential sought, transferred work and requested delivery status. If an exception applies, cite the recipient's actual instruction in the organizer instead of leaving an unexplained missing transcript. For translations, group each institution's source and grading legend separately so similar course codes are not mistaken for duplicates. If two schools jointly issued a program record, retain the named awarding and teaching roles rather than choosing one issuer for convenience. The complete academic picture should remain visible without falsely merging distinct institutions' authority.

Common questions
Does a final degree transcript replace all earlier records?
Not automatically. Check the recipient’s coverage and original-source requirements.
Can transferred credit show the original grade?
Read the actual record; a transfer notation may omit it.
Should exchange study be hidden to simplify the file?
No. Follow the recipient’s disclosure and record instructions.
Who approves a missing originating transcript?
The recipient or evaluator under its own process.
