The short answer

How is financial sponsorship different from the family relationship petition?

A family petition establishes the claimed relationship; the Affidavit of Support addresses a separate financial framework. Department of State guidance distinguishes the petitioner’s affidavit, household size, income evidence, assets and any additional sponsor. A job offer is not a substitute for the required affidavit.

At a glance

  • A family petition establishes the claimed relationship; the Affidavit of Support addresses a separate financial framework.
  • The source distinguishes employment income, eligible household-member contributions and assets rather than treating every account balance or family promise as income.

The petitioner still has a financial role where I-864 applies

The official Affidavit of Support FAQ says the petitioner must submit the required affidavit even when a joint sponsor or household member contributes under the applicable rules. It separately discusses household size and current financial evidence. Do not describe an additional sponsor as replacing the petitioner or assume that the number of people living at one address is the complete household-size calculation.

Use a role column beside each financial document. The person who filed the family petition may also have another role, but those responsibilities should be identified rather than assumed. This reduces confusion when records from household members or another proposed sponsor are being discussed.

Financial records must answer the particular sponsor question

The source distinguishes employment income, eligible household-member contributions and assets rather than treating every account balance or family promise as income. It also says a credible employment offer to the visa applicant does not replace an insufficient I-864. Keep the record’s owner, tax period and current meaning visible. This page does not quote annual guideline amounts or calculate a family’s eligibility from a salary alone.

Create a role map before gathering financial papers. Note which person is responsible for which document and which institution requests it. Keep private financial records out of public research tools and ask about the actual obligation before signing anything.

Evidence that explains this particular question

Petitioner record: Identify who filed the relationship petition. Financial-support document: Preserve the actual form or requirement being researched. Household account: Keep the facts about income and household members with their sources. Beneficiary process: Identify the visa or adjustment stage involved.

For example, a tax return describes a past tax period while a current employment record describes present circumstances. A large figure in one does not automatically explain a different figure in the other. Preserve both periods and their actual owners before applying the official financial framework.

The boundary to resolve before the next step

Reconcile the tax period, current income record and actual household-size question. A financial document should keep its owner and meaning rather than being placed in the file merely because it shows a large number.
