Can I renew a two-year conditional Green Card with Form I-90?
A conditional Green Card carries a two-year period tied to a separate conditions-removal process. USCIS distinguishes marriage-based Form I-751 from entrepreneur Form I-829. Replacing a damaged card and removing conditions answer different questions.

What this guide covers
- Read the category before the expiration date
- Marriage and entrepreneur cases have different forms
- The joint marriage petition has a particular window
At a glance
- A two-year conditional card cannot simply be renewed.
- I-751 and I-829 address different conditional residence categories.
- Joint filing rules must not be generalized to every waiver situation.
Read the category before the expiration date
A card's two-year expiration is a reason to identify the conditions attached to the residence, not simply to search for a renewal button. USCIS states that a conditional permanent resident receives a two-year card and cannot renew that conditional card. The conditions-removal petition addresses the underlying conditional residence. A card replacement transaction does not perform that legal function.
Marriage and entrepreneur cases have different forms
USCIS routes marriage-based conditional residents to Form I-751 and entrepreneur conditional residents to Form I-829. The similar card length does not make their evidence or proceedings interchangeable. Keep the original approval and admission records with the card when identifying the category. This guide explains the distinction; it does not decide whether a particular person satisfies the conditions or an exception.
The joint marriage petition has a particular window
The joint I-751 regulation describes the 90-day period before the second anniversary of conditional permanent residence. That is a rule about the joint petition. It should not be turned into a universal instruction for every conditional resident. Separate waiver provisions address situations such as certain terminated marriages, hardship and abuse, with their own requirements. Someone facing those circumstances needs the actual applicable provision considered, rather than a deadline copied from a general overview.
Genuine marriage evidence concerns the relationship
The I-751 rules discuss documents showing the circumstances of the marriage, including financial and household evidence and other pertinent records. An authentic explanation of the couple's history matters more than making every family's records look identical. Different addresses, incomplete joint accounts or a changed family situation require truthful context. Never fabricate a shared account, alter a document or expose sensitive personal information in a public help forum to satisfy an assumed checklist.
Separate a pending petition from a final decision
The joint-petition regulation provides for extension of conditional status while a properly filed petition is adjudicated. An extension and a favorable final decision are different events. Read the actual notice for the evidence it supplies and keep it with the relevant card. This page does not publish an extension length or calculate a personal filing date. For an expiring card, travel or an employment document request, the specific receipt and current official instructions determine the document question.
