Can every professor self-petition under EB-1B?
EB-1B concerns outstanding professors and researchers with international recognition, qualifying teaching or research experience and a qualifying U.S. job offer. It is an employer-petitioned immigrant framework, not the same as EB-1A self-petitioning or every academic appointment.

Identify international recognition in an academic field
The regulation concerns a defined academic field and recognition as outstanding in it. Awards, judging, original research, publications and other listed evidence must be read under the actual criteria. A university affiliation or a long publication list alone does not answer the whole standard.
Keep the experience requirement separate
The framework requires at least three years of qualifying teaching or research experience. Experience gained while working toward an advanced degree receives specific treatment; it should not automatically be counted like every other job. Employer letters should describe actual duties and periods rather than only provide a total number.
Read the offered position carefully
Qualifying offers include the specified tenured/tenure-track teaching or permanent research settings. The regulation defines permanent research employment and addresses eligible private-employer research units. A visiting title or fixed project should not be silently described as a permanent position without examining the actual terms.
Distinguish employer petitioning from labor certification
The prospective qualifying U.S. employer files the I-140, and this classification does not require labor certification. That absence does not eliminate the job-offer or employer requirements. Keep the institution’s offer, organizational eligibility and the researcher’s achievements as separate evidence categories.
Compare EB-1B with other academic routes
EB-1A has a different petitioner/job-offer framework; EB-2 or a national interest waiver raises different standards. A person’s academic field alone does not decide the route. This free table identifies the actual evidence questions without choosing a personal category or predicting a university or USCIS decision.
The initial recognition framework calls for at least two of the listed evidence categories, with comparable-evidence treatment in the specified circumstances. That recognition evidence is separate from the three-year experience and qualifying-offer requirements. Two items of any kind should not be treated as two satisfied criteria or a complete petition.

| Recognition | Internationally outstanding academic work | What do the original sources show? |
| Experience | Qualifying teaching or research | Which periods and duties meet the rule? |
| Offer | Specified teaching/research setting | Who petitions and on what terms? |
