Does having a master’s degree guarantee EB-2?
EB-2 includes advanced-degree professionals and people of exceptional ability under distinct requirements. The worker’s qualifications, the job’s requirements and the petition process must fit together. A national interest waiver can remove the job-offer and labor-certification requirement in a qualifying case, but does not remove the underlying EB-2 standard.

Read the advanced-degree framework
The regulation describes a U.S. advanced degree or foreign equivalent, and the specified bachelor’s-plus-progressive-experience alternative. The record needs more than a diploma title: identify the awarded degree, equivalence question and documented post-degree experience where that alternative is claimed.
Connect the job requirements to the classification
An employer-sponsored case concerns the actual position and its minimum requirements as well as the worker. A person holding a master’s degree does not automatically convert any offered job into an EB-2 position. Keep the certified job requirements and worker evidence separately identifiable.
Distinguish exceptional ability from an ordinary qualification
The exceptional-ability framework concerns expertise significantly above that ordinarily encountered in the sciences, arts or business and specified supporting evidence. A license, salary record, membership or experience letter must be assessed under the actual criterion and broader standard, not treated as a universal approval token.
Identify the ordinary employer process or a waiver request
Many EB-2 cases involve a job offer, labor certification and employer-filed I-140. A national interest waiver is a separate request to waive the specified job-offer/labor-certification requirement. It can permit self-petitioning but still requires underlying EB-2 eligibility and the national-interest analysis.
Separate classification from the final residence stage
Even an approved petition does not itself create visa availability or grant adjustment. Preference, priority date and chargeability remain relevant to the later stage. The free checklist explains which requirement a record addresses without deciding whether a reader’s education, experience or endeavor is sufficient.
For the advanced-degree equivalency alternative described by the regulation, a bachelor’s degree followed by at least five years of progressive experience is a specific framework. It is not an invitation to replace any missing degree with arbitrary work history. Keep the sequence, nature of experience and actual academic award clear.
