The short answer

Is O-2 available for any companion of an O-1 worker?

O-2 is an accompanying support classification tied to qualifying O-1 artistic, athletic or motion-picture/television work. It is not a general companion, family or business-assistant category. The support person’s essential role and the connection to the particular O-1 activity must be established.

What this guide covers

  • Start with the O-1 activity being supported
  • Explain the support skills and experience
  • Keep production-specific rules visible
  • Use the separate petition and consultation framework
  • Distinguish support workers from relatives

At a glance

  • Identify the O-1 principal and actual activity.
  • Describe the support skills and prior relationship.
  • Check the field-specific support provision.

Start with the O-1 activity being supported

The regulation defines the support framework around the O-1’s actual event or production. Identify the principal worker, project, duties and period. A close professional relationship alone does not establish that the proposed support meets the category, and O-2 should not be assumed to accompany every O-1A scientific or business engagement.

Explain the support skills and experience

The inquiry concerns the person’s essential role and the relevant skills or experience connected with the principal activity. For the applicable category, evidence needs more than an informal statement that the principal prefers a familiar colleague. Preserve the actual work history and explain the proposed function without inventing irreplaceability.

Keep production-specific rules visible

Motion-picture and television support has its own regulatory considerations, including continuity and production circumstances. Do not copy an athletic support explanation into a production case. The planned U.S. work and the real prior relationship need to be read under the correct provision.

Use the separate petition and consultation framework

The regulation requires O-2 support to be petitioned separately from the O-1 principal and describes relevant consultations. A support person is not added as a dependent simply because the same dates appear. Keep the petitioner, consultation and supporting record attributable to the actual support request.

Distinguish support workers from relatives

A spouse or child uses the applicable dependent framework, not O-2 merely to accompany the principal. Conversely, a paid support job should not be hidden inside a family-travel description. The free table separates the roles so a reader can identify the correct question without treating this page as permission to work.

Common questions

Is O-2 available for any companion of an O-1 worker?

No. It concerns qualifying support for specified O-1 activities, not general companionship or every professional assistant.

Is the support person included on the principal O-1 petition?

The regulation describes a separate O-2 petition from the O-1 principal request.

Can a spouse use O-2 just to travel with the principal?

Family accompaniment and qualifying support work are different frameworks; a relationship alone does not establish O-2.

Is the same support explanation valid for every field?

No. Athletic/artistic and motion-picture/television provisions require attention to their actual criteria and production context.

What should the work-history evidence explain?

It should identify the real prior relationship, skills and proposed essential support function, rather than merely repeating that the principal prefers the person.
